ICA Early Career Award
Young Scientist Conference Attendance Grants
The board of the International Commission for Acoustics has approved a
scheme for assisting young scientists in attending the triennial
International Congress on Acoustics. This scheme also has the support
of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA) through its Committee on
International Research and Education. The International Commission and
the ASA have together allocated funds to support between fifteen and
twenty-five grants having a value of between 500 and 1000 US Dollars
in order to assist young researchers working in the discipline of
acoustics in attending the forthcoming International Congress (the
18th ICA) to be held in Kyoto, Japan from 4th-9th April 2004. The
grant should be used to help fund travel to and accommodation at the
conference and may be used in conjunction with support from other
sources. Note that successful candidates will still be required to
pay the registration fee by 20 December 2003 in the same way as other
speakers.
Candidates must be relatively early in their professional career
(typically a maximum of 15 years of active career), but can be either
undergraduate or postgraduate students, postdoctoral researchers or
young academics. Priority will be given to applicants from developing
countries.
Candidates should submit to the 18th ICA Secretariat (see below) by
fax or email a full four-page paper describing the work that they
would like to present at the Congress. Candidates may submit a paper
written jointly with others but the candidate must be first
author. The deadline for submission for papers is October 31st
2003. Note that this is in advance of the date for the normal
submission of papers that is scheduled for 20th December 2003. Also
note that the manuscript submitted for the award should also be
submitted for the conference proceedings through the website of
ICA2004 by 20th December 2003.
The submitted papers should also be accompanied by a letter of
reference from an officer of the candidate's local acoustical society
which itself should be a member society of the International
Commission for Acoustics. (Details of member societies can be found on
the homepage of the International Commission:
http://www.icacommission.org). Alternatively, the letter of reference
may be prepared by a full-time member of the academic staff of the
host institution of the candidate.
The papers submitted will be judged by a sub-committee of the
International Commission and successful candidates will be sent an
official letter from the Commission letting them know of the magnitude
of the award made. It is also the intention that successful candidates
should use this evidence of support from the Commission in order to
assist in attracting support from other sources. Notification of
awards made will be mailed on 1st December 2003. Successful candidates
should register for the conference with the payment of registration
fee on December 20th 2003.
